The World Around Us

As an introduction to "The World Around Us" our class went on a trip to Brick Lane where we had the opportunity to take photographs of the people walking around us and the buildings surrounding the area.
Upminster Windmill and The Country Park

The next set of photographs were taken in a natural environment and of fairly natural things such as plants and trees.
I like the detail in this image of the spider as you can clearly see the hair on it's legs.
Ryan Russell Response

These photographs have been taken in the park. No one was around, the subject was completely isolated and alone in the natural environment.
Ryan Russell - Untitled
This photograph hasbeen taken in black and white with a camera that takes film, I know thisbecause through researching Ryan Russell’s other work, he only uses camerasthat use film, none of his work is digital. As the image is monochrome, Ibelieve this adds to the sadness of the photograph, as the subject looksunhappy whilst in the graveyard. The limited tonal range could reflect thelimited amount of happiness within the graveyard.  The lighting in thisimage is from a natural source being the sun behind the clouds, the effect ofthis soft light makes the photograph appear more sad and depressive.  It’s hard tocategorise this photograph as it has no name and no explanation with ithowever, I would say that it was documentary. I believe that the location ofthe photograph may be affecting the subjects mood and therefore making her veryuncomfortable.  Within the image, onlythe subject and the grave she is nearest are in focus, the rest of thephotograph is out of focus which leads the eyes straight to the subject andstraight to her emotions.  The treein the background shows what time of the year it is, as it has no leaves itmust be autumn, this could also mean that he cold could be making the subjectunhappy. The coldness of the autumn could also be shown through the monochromeimage as the whites and grey are quite chilling.  In conclusion, Ibelieve that my response to this photograph is quite subtle but I think Iachieved the best I could.

Enclosures

My next theme within 'The World Around Us' was Enclosures. I first began brainstorming physical enclosures and then came up with 'enclosing innocence'. After discovering what I wanted to do, I was certain that my younger brother would be the perfect model and then began to think about how I would achieve this.
To achieve enclosing his innocence, I decided to firstly take some very natural portraits of my brother, then as I began to experiment I on the scratched out his face to cover up his identity.
Phil Toledano

I believe this photograph has a quirky and humorous element whilst also presenting a serious and more devious side in the potrayal of the grim reaper. The photograph is humorous as the scenario is out of the ordinary. Personally I like how there is a sing saying 'Subway' and I think that it really adds to the photograph otherwise it wouldn't have the same effect. The grim reaper signifies death and I think it shows how death is all around us, no one can escape it and everyday, we as individuals are dying however nobody knows when or where their life will be taken.

The identity of the grim reaper is hidden. I think that photographer did this intentionally to show death is not a known person or that death isn't even a person, possibly a demon. In contrast, the grim reaper could suggest that everyone has a dark side willing to take a life depending on the situation therefore the identity being hidden as it's the human race as a whole. I would say that the colours in the photograph also represent death, the subtle greys ranging to the darkest which ressemble the coldness of a corpse, how all the colour drains from your body when a loved one is lost and can never return.

The subject is in the very middle of the photograph which draws your eye straight into the concept of the photograph also, the lighting in the photograph appears to be very subtle, like a dismal grey day in Britain therefore it seems natural. It's almost as if a passerby took the picture as the view point reminds me of the busy crowds in London and how everybody is frantically hurrying to their destination.

This photograph inspires me because I love the humours element and how the identity of the grim reaper is hidden which links in with the enclosing innocence in my photographs.
Final Outcomes
Evaluation

The starting point for my coursework wasvery natural environments such as parks and the Upminster windmill. As thetitle was ‘The World Around Us’ I found this helpful as some places around meare more calm and tranquil compared to the busy streets and roads. The firstfew sets of photographs I took were of plants, trees and the windmill. Ibelieve that they were successful and gave me a wider variety of things tophotograph. When I began my response photographs, Ifelt quite inspired and became excited about find a location to shoot on. OnceI had decided where to shoot,  Imade sure I went at a time when it would be very empty and isolated to get theeffect I wanted. When I began experimenting on the images Iproduced for my enclosures theme, I decided that scratching out over certainparts of the photograph would create a nice effect changing the images fromjust portraits to photographs with more in depth meaning. Phil Tolendo influenced me the most withhis Grim Reaper photograph, as the face of the reaper was covered and they wasa slightly humorous side to it which I liked. This artist inspired me to usemask in my work which proved beneficial in the end as I got the desiredphotographs I wanted. In conclusion, I was extremely happy withmy photographs and I believe that the enclosures theme I accomplish to the bestof my ability. If I had more time I would have looked at more artists.
